“Can the dead live again? If so, this would give me hope through all my years of struggle, and I would eagerly await the release of death.” ~ Job 14:14
Job’s question, “Can the dead live again?”, is as vital today as it was in his time. Job is correct that the answer to this question holds hope for all life. If there is no life after death, what is the point of life? How do we determine how to behave if we will not be held accountable for our actions when we depart this life ? But if there is life after death then we have reason to live. If there is life after death, we have hope through life’s difficulties. If there is life after death, we have motivation to live our lives in the here-and-now with purpose.
For Christians, the question of “life after death” and it’s meaning is answered at Easter in the resurrection of Jesus from the grave. Everything hinges on this event.
“And if Christ has not been raised, our preaching is useless and so is your faith. More than that, we are then found to be false witnesses about God, for we have testified about God that he raised Christ from the dead. But he did not raise him if in fact the dead are not raised. For if the dead are not raised, then Christ has not been raised either. And if Christ has not been raised, your faith is futile; you are still in your sins. Then those also who have fallen asleep in Christ are lost.If only for this life we have hope in Christ, we are of all people most to be pitied.” ~ The Apostle Paul (1 Cor. 15:14-19)
If Jesus didn’t rise… celebrating Easter is empty… the words of Paul and the other Apostles are lies… there has been no forgiveness of sin… those who died thinking it was true have no hope. If living a life for God has no consequence when this life is done, Christians are just silly.
So this Easter we’re going to explore the answer to Job’s question… “Can the dead live again?” Can we discover if it’s true that Jesus lived, died, and rose again? The impact of the answer to these questions on our lives is vital! The answers to these questions can change everything!
