March Madness will begin soon, and though I know this refers to the NCAA, I kind of feel like it is a good caption for our family’s life in the month of March. (Okay from April – February too.) Making meals, keeping up the house, feeding the animals, paying the bills, taking kids to school, picking kids up from school, helping kids with their school, making sure the kids take a bath and brush their teeth (for the love!), loving on your spouse, trying to stay awake to spend time with kids and spouse outside of school work…
Then we add, don’t we? Sports, school activities, a work thing here, an extra family thing there – all this on top of an already full life. We begin to feel depleted and yet we know we need to offer more. In fact, we know that at the end of all the to-do’s, there’s The One who doesn’t always make the list.
That is why we have included DISCIPLESHIP ON THE WAY, REACH OUT, and the Parent Post-It within our new Ascent newsletter – On Point. R.O.C.K. Point Family Ministry desires to come alongside your family to help you and your children to Rely On Christ the King daily – to grow in your knowledge of Him and to deepen your relationship with Him. We know there is no one-size-fits-all way to do this specifically, but God did give us principles that can be used within any family, at any time, and in any place.
4 “Listen, O Israel! The Lord is our God, the Lord alone. 5 And you must love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul, and all your strength. 6 And you must commit yourselves wholeheartedly to these commands that I am giving you today. 7 Repeat them again and again to your children. Talk about them when you are at home and when you are on the road, when you are going to bed and when you are getting up. 8 Tie them to your hands and wear them on your forehead as reminders. 9 Write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates.”
To really disciple someone in Christ and to really grow in your relationship personally with Christ, He needs to get into every area of your life. God doesn’t want to sit on a shelf or be restricted to certain times of the day or week. God doesn’t want someone with more knowledge or a better spiritual pedigree to disciple your children; he chose you. That is what the passage above states very clearly;
“Repeat them again and again to YOUR children.”
You are the best person to train your children to know God because He says you are. And despite what we are tempted to tell God, He doesn’t make mistakes.
In DISCIPLESHIP ON THE WAY, we want to give you some simple, practical ideas of how you can pass on God’s Word and encouragement while spending time with your children at home or on the go or as you’re sending them on their way.
In REACH OUT, we want to encourage families to serve together. When we serve together, our hearts become intertwined in ways that no other activity can produce. Living on mission is also a way for your kiddos to see The Word lived out. Your lives become the visual!
Parent Post-It is where we want to meet with you, the parents (be it biologically or spiritually or both). Parents need encouragement. We are raising eternal beings and some days it can seem like the blind leading the blind. And for all the access we have to community, we can still tend to seclude ourselves, leaving us alone with our doubts, struggles, anger, and shame, to name a few. Parenthood is no easy occupation but neither is it a job to just get through. You have a HIGH CALLING straight from God, and He has not left you alone to do it!
So, in the Parent Post-It, you will find a few words to hopefully encourage you in your own walk with Christ as well as in your relationship with your family.
Your Post-It for the month of March: HE CHOSE YOU! Remember this, Parents, when you doubt yourself and your abilities, the God of all wisdom and knowledge, chose you for your children. There is no one better to offer them Jesus than you!
You didn’t choose me. I chose you. I appointed you to go and produce lasting fruit…
There is also an amazing account in Isaiah 45 where God takes someone who doesn’t even know Him to fulfill His promises. God equips us even when we don’t know it!
Our intention for this new way of communicating to our Ascent (K-5th grade) parents is that you will be informed well, equipped well, and inspired well. It is one of our greatest honors to serve your children on Sunday’s and it is one of our greatest hopes to serve your whole family the best we can.
